Alice Loftus - Henry WARREN, Dublin
I have a possible Loftus connection way back in Ireland. The Mormon IGI and your online genealogy has a marriage in 1597 of an Alice Loftus to a Henry WARREN [my possible relative] of Rathfarnham, Dublin. Alice was a daughter of Archbishop of Dublin Adam Loftus. Does anyone else have this reference and any more Warren genealogy detail on it?

Thank you Barrie Wright

Would like you to put my search for great grandparents village in mulrany up on bulletin board. I know quite a lot and have been over in mayo the last couple of years but just cant quite pin down exactly which village in mulraney they came from.

G/grandparents patrick loftus 1840-1923approx farmer wed mary loftus /nee o:malley mulraney area.
Grandparents 1867-1945 patrick loftus (mulraney ) wed 1865-1925 mary loftus/nee ruddy( currane) they were married in our lady star of the sea in saltcoats in scotland where they came over for the tattie howking before moving to glasgow and raising a family listed below.

helen loftus B 13/03/1894
mary loftus B7/10/1895 D20/10/1942
patrick loftus B 29/01/1898 D 28/08/1911
michael loftus B21/09/1899 D../09/1961
annie loftus B 01/02/1902 D../10/1964
john loftus B 12/06/1904 D ../051959
peter loftus (my dad) B ../../1907 D 04/26/1981

Now i realise this is the story of hundreds of irish familys who emigrated to scotland and elsewhere but i am convinced that when patrick came over to scotland he would have left his parents at home or at least a younger brother or sister to look after things at home,so it is my quest to find where his home was in mayo / mulraney. Now like a lot of you i should have asked my parents when they were alive but dad never talked about his dad due to his dad leaving the family home when his wife mary died of the TB in 1935 and he was looked after by his older sisters and brothers. Over the years i have managed to trace what happened to my grandfather patrick and it is not a nice tale but quite typical of the times. The family would see him from time to time when he was between jobs and not drinking and he was living in a down and out hostel in pitt st in glasgow. But he was to die in the poor house in edgfauld rd at the right old age of 78. I have only recently found their graves and i go there to pray for us all. I am a proud grandson of irish imigrants from co mayo and i will never forget my roots, so if there is anyone out there who thinks they can help me ,please get in touch.

The only other clue i have is that there was a very bad stutter among the male members of the loftus clan,my father had it and my cousin patsy in england has it.

My father peter was school jannie at holyrood in govanhill for thirty years and he was brought up in anderson in lancefield st by his married sister. I have my grandparents original wedding certificate from our lady star of the sea chuch in saltcoats (which is still there)1889 and it makes interesting reading. They are threatened on the certificate that for any false declaration the penalty is seven years transportation to van diemans land. Quite how they were expected to understand this as they couldnt read or write to understand what was on the certificate is beyond me. We were also related to the o'malleys from paisley.

Loftus seems to be an old irish name from co mayo and translates into gaellic as loughnain. It can be english as well as there is a village in yorkshire called loftus and an earl of loftus and of course loftus road where queens park rangers play Hope i havent gone on too long tom, please let me know if you put this up on board for me.

Sincerely yours,

Gerald loftus

UPDATE

I am sending below latest information i have on finding my g,grandads croft and reason why i couldnt find before.

As i stated i knew for a fact he had wed mary malley or o,malley, but the trail had went cold and i now believe that mary died and patrick remaried to bridgit mallowney and this is why nobody could help me at burrishoole and mulraney, perhaps they dont know that their great grandad had married again ,and as my grandfather patrick was allready away from home they named their first son a patrick also.

Below is the result of search i had done by my good friend dianne who found all this out for me.

Went thru the films ordered and think that I may have found the family. In Newport parish register I find children born to Pat Loftus & Mary Malley:
Anne b 14 July 1870
Mary 12 Jun 1866 born in Rossgaliv townland. This is a stones throw from Mallaranny.

In 26 Jan 1877 Bridget is born to Pat & Br Mullowney - witnesses were Thomas & Bridget Loftus. In 1881 there was a Patrick born to this same couple. Both born in Rossgaliv.

In the 1901 census Rossgaliv:

Patrick Loftus 60yrs farmer
Bridget wife 50yrs
Mich son 22yrs
Patrick 20yrs
Maria 17yrs
John 15yrs
Peter 11yrs
Sarah 10yrs
Martin 8yrs (idiot, dumb)
Kate 5yrs

I believe Mary Malley died after 1870 (when Anne was born) and Patrick remarried Bridget Mullowney. I have heard it said that when children still lived in the home aft a parent remarried, they were sent away to live with a relative. If true, that may explain why Pat & Br had another Patrick living with them in 1901. I also note the name Peter in the family- a name that seems to be passed down the line.

Elizabeth Kerr
I am looking for descendants of my grandfather Herman Lofthus, and his wife Ragna Sieverson, who came here from, I believe Bergen, Norway late 1800s or 1899? They setteled in hibbings, minn., but later moved to minneapolis, im not sure of the date of Hermans death. My fathers name was Richard olsen lofthus, he had two sisters, Golda and Thora, i believe he had a brother Rolf. My father, Richard was a marine in ww 2 in the pacific. He studied on a art scholarship at ecole des beaux arts, in parit, before outbreak of war. I was born 3-2-41 in minneapolis, minn. mothers name was margaret thornberry.

Hope to hear from any lofthuses from minnesota or wherever. i know i have dozens of cousins, but after my parents divorced, 1952, in auburn, ind. i lost contact, which was not very much to begin with.

My father, went by the name Olsen, Loftus, and Lofthus possibly. He was a marine in WW 2, served in the pacific, he was 27 years old, after the war he came home to Chicago, and worked I believe for the Buzza Co. a greeting card company. In 1950 or 51 we moved to Auburn, Ind. where we lived for three years, he was art director for the greeting card company whose name I cant recall. He painted murals commissioned for the Office of Procurement, Wash.D.C. I have pictures of them, and I would love to find out if they still exist. I think they were spectacular paintings, but you know some of the old murals were painted over or disposed of as time went on. They were for the Dept. of Treasury I believe. Many years later I lived with him in Glen Ellyn for a short time, having moved there from S.F. with my son David, Lurie. After that I lost touch with him, Im sorry to say there was a misunderstanding. I moved to Chicago and the last time I talked to him was in 1972, on the phone, to tell him of the birth of my son, Jonathan Kerr. He had a heart attack , although he was still working as art director, for a company in Chicago, cant recall the name. Im afraid he must have died not too long after the address I recall is Dawn Ave. In Glen Ellyn, he had some friends of the G.E. police force. His wifes name was Leslie.

I think my father died in 1973, in Glen Ellyn, Ill. He was an artist and worked as art director of a major greeting card co. in Chicago, Ill. Not sure of the name, his (third) wifes name was Leslie, they lived at 430 Dawn Ave. in Glen Ellyn. Hope to hear from somebody. Also he was a marine in WW2 stationed in the Pacific (Tokyo) he was then 27 years old , and was known as the old man.

I recently read that many Norwegian Lofthuses, came to Ireland and over the centuries became the Irish Loftuses. I never thought there was any connection, but that is going back many centuries. Did you ever get the feeling, from just looking at various people, that you had a gut feeling that they looked so familiar to you? Im talking about alot of people I have met here in Chicago, who are in that category. I really cant claim to be Irish descent. (catholic) my Grandfather was an Orangeman, from Castle Caulfield, his name was David Thornberry. He was Dean of the Cathedral in Laramie, Wyo. about 1910? I was told he went to Kenyon College. His children were David Ritchie, Elizabeth (Coughlin) and my Mother Margaret (Peggy) Loftus,(Olsen) who was my mother. My Uncle David Ritchie, was the Episcopal Bishop of Wyoming, and the arch deacon of s. ohio in the 1950's. My grandfather was a somewhat reticent person, who did not talk too much of his past, but as I have gotten older, I think his childhood , in County Mayo? must have been of such a nature that he did not want to talk about it. He did mention a favorite sister, Eliza or Elizabeth, but as for his family over there I have no idea. Ive been told he worked in the steel mills in Pennsylvania to save money to go school in this country. the best memory I have of him, His last house in Birmingham, Mich. was that he loved his garden and that it was so so beautiful that people would slow down, in their cars to take a look at it. It was at Southfield Rd. Birlmingham, Mich. His in laws the Hulberts lived across the street, at 680 Brown St. My grandmother, his wife, was Frances Odin Hulbert. I spent alot of time with them as a child.

Hope somebody can give me some news.

Elizabeth Kerr

Brett Michael Loftus
My name is Brett Michael Loftus. I am 24 years old, and currently live in San Diego, C.A. My father, Eugine Michael Loftus died at the age of 28, in 1977. He was born in Illinois. I have no contact with his family. When my father died, I was brought to California, and have since lost all contact with that family.

Looking for any info. about the loftus family in Chicago or Illinois

John Loftus
My name is Peter Walsh, which I know doesn't really fit in with the theme, but bear with me... I am looking for anyone who may have some information on members of the Loftus family who would have come over from County Mayo and eventually settled in Illinois. Here is the information I have... John LOFTUS was born in (January?) 1819, probably near Wesport in County Mayo, IE. He married Honor (or Honore?) MCHALE who was born in (January?) 1820, also probably near Westport. I only know of one child, a girl named Frances. I believe Frances was also born near Westport and then travelled with her parents to the US (though it is possible that she later travelled to the US and brought them over subsequently, I really don't know. I do know that John died in 1869 near Riverton and Buffalo, IL. Honor died on June 30, 1893 in Buffalo, IL. Frances married John CONLON (b, (January?) 1824 [this date seems horribly wrong, but it is what I have.] near Kiltimagh, County Mayo, IE / d. 1904 Riverton, IL) and had many children: Nell, Joe, Kate, Mary, John, Nora, Mark, Annie, William, Margaret, and Frances. Frances CONLON (the only child I have data for) was born December 12, 1865 on a farm near what is now 2500 E. Moffat Ave. in Springfield, IL. and died March 29, 1955 in an apartment in or near Springfield. Frances married Patrick Frank (Francis?) WALSH, born 1859, Castleroyan (near Kiltimagh), County Mayo, IE. died 1919 805 S. 8th St., Springfield, IL. Patrick was my great grandfather.

And there is my Loftus connection.

Anne Loftus
I am endeavouring to research the Tottenham name and have found that Sir Charles Tottenham married Anne Loftus of Loftus Hall in County Wexford. Have also been told that Sir Charles may have been the first Marquess of Ely. Sir Charles owned an estate called Tottenham Hall but later gave it to his eldest son. I saw a video (a very poor copy) of a film about the ghost of Loftus Hall where it told the story of Anne, daughter of Sir Charles and his wife, Anne. Is there anything in your records that maybe able to help me piece my tree together. I know there was a Samuel Tottenham in New York and that his children emmigrated to Tasmania and then out here to New Zealand. Some of the Tottenham children of today still carry the Loftus name as a second christian name. Hoping you can help me.

Yours faithfully Shyrlee Ryder

Clay Novak
Tom,

My name is Clay Novak. My mother's maiden name is Loftus. Her father was Edward Lawrence Loftus. He was born in the USA (first generation) on 28 May 1918 in Chicago. I don't know much about his family history right now. Unfortunately, he passed away before I got interested in the family history. From what I have been told, his father (if not his mother also) came from somewhere around County Cork. Stories have also been told that he was run out of his town because of some illegal doings (I don't know that for sure). I do know that my grandfather's older sister Agnes is still alive and living outside of Chicago. He also had another sister named Katherine (everyone called her Kit) that was alive when I was growing up. My grandmother is also still alive (Clara Loftus) and my mother Patricia and her sister Katherine are also living in Illinois. If you have any leads for me to go with, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

All The Way! CPT Clay E. Novak
