David James Loftus
Norway - Lofthus-Loftus

I am a descendant of Lofthuses from Norway. Thorbjorn Lofthus, born 2/6/1827, and his wife Anne Hoveland, born 12/19/1830, were born in Telemarken, Norway, and immigrated to the United States in 1868, according to research by the spouse of one of their grandsons -- Audrey Stanfield Loftus of Eugene, Oregon, who has lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, Coos Bay, Oregon, and currently resides in Kirkland, Washington.

Of their eight children, the sixth, John Tom Lofthus, born in 1/21/1869 and died in 11/18/1943, is a great-grandfather of mine. I believe he resided in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, where all his children were born, including my grandfather Arthur William Loftus and his brothers Jule and Theodore, who all went to Alaska in the 1920s.

I have some information on the descendants of John Tom Lofthuses siblings, which include Ole Lofthus, who married Berta Berg; Ragnhild (Rena) Lofthus, who married Hans Johnson; Soren "Sam" Lofthus, who married Signe Carlson; Gunhild "Jenny" Lofthus, who married Herman Anderson; and Anne Lofthus, who married Julius Johnson.

I don't know where most of these people lived or live today -- probably Wisconsin and elsewhere in the Midwest -- and my information is 25 years old. I'm sure there have been quite a few births and a handful of deaths since it was gathered. I would love to hear from Lofthuses, Loftuses, or Rebnes, Moats, Dobbs, Johnsons, Gundersons, Sathers, Poppys, Zimers, Solbergs, Martis, Morongs, Kuklas, Harengs, Stolts, Seversons, Andersons, Theobalds, Lathams, Swains, Browns, Crandells, Buechells, Burrells, and Bronsteds who appear on my family tree or are related to them.

Lofthus, Norway, is a lovely town, by the way. Edvard Grieg used to summer there -- you can visit his cottage -- and composed a lot of his music there.

Most of the Loftus descendants in my John Tom Loftus branch have settled in Oregon and Alaska. Besides Loftus, their names are Younger, McNaughton, Kirkwood, and Wiegert. The Toby A. Loftus who posted a note on this page's Loftus Bulletin Board is my younger brother.

Ian Loftus
Australia Darwin'ian Origins

Hi Duane

I'm Ian Loftus and I live in Darwin, NT, Australia. My Loftus forefathers arrived in Australia circa 1914, from Lancashire in England; my great-grandfather (John Loftus born 1870) and his wife Mary (nee Whittle born 1875) arrived with their children, which included my grandfather Harry Loftus (born 1913). John's father (Peter/Patrick) was apparently born in Ireland but I haven't yet been able to fully establish this link.

I'm in the process of creating my own website (http://www.ozemail.com.au/~loftus/); at the moment my ISP's got a very average "standard" page there, but my own stuff is likely to go up within the next week and should include some Loftus stuff.

I can be contacted on 2 separate e-mail addresses:

ian.loftus@nt.gov.au (my office)
loftus@ozemail.com.au (my personal address)

I look forward to hearing from you soon...

Ian Loftus

Judy Lyons - Alice Loftus, Archibald. Pennsylvania
Hi Duane!

My husband's paternal grandmother was Alice Loftus, born about 1880, (exact date unknown) in Archbald, Pennsylvania. She died 4 June 1960 in Clark Summit State Hospital, Clark Summit, Pa. at the age of 80.

Her parents were John (?) Loftus and Margaret Nealon. These names were taken from a copy of Alice's death certificate which was a bit hard to read. We're not sure if they were born in the U.S. or Ireland.

Alice married John T. Lyons, (born 4 June 1874 in New York City). He died 17 Feb. 1954 in Scranton, Pa. They are both buried in Achbald, Pa.
Alice and John Lyons had 6 children:
Thomas R. born 1904, d: 1985 John M. born 1906, d: 1981
Loretta born 1907, d: 1954
(My father-in-law) Richard J. born 1915, d: 1988
Francis A. born 1916

John M. and Loretta never married. They are both buried in Archbald, Pa. Although I haven't checked on all of the siblings, my father-in-law was baptized at Saint Thomas Acquinas Catholic Church in Archbald. The church secretary said she could find no record of Alice being baptized there nor could she find a marriage record.

Also, I am trying to find any brothers or sisters of Alice.
If there is anyone out there who may have information I would be extremely grateful.

My e-mail address is: GeneoMom@aol.com I was sent to your site by Patrick Daley of Buffalo, New York and I am so pleased to make your acquaintance.

What a fantastic web site! Keep up the wonderful work. It is deeply appreciated.

James Joseph Loftus

Dear Duane

My name is James Joseph Loftus. I am 43 and I live in Manchester GB. Just wanted to take the time to say "thank you" for taking the time to build the site. It's what makes a Loftus a Loftus no matter where they are.

My Grand Father, James Joseph Loftus DOB aprox 1890 born County Wicklow Ireland.
His Wife Lena Noonan DOB 1891 born County Cork.
My Father William Loftus DOB 1917 was born County Cork.

I hope this is of some use to someone. If so could you please drop a line on this page or, if you can add to the story of our people then, please do.

Thank you

JJ

Daniel James Loftus
Loftus Oration Cup in Irish Parliament

Hi!

My name is Daniel James Loftus, the son of James Thomas Loftus of Detroit. I grew up in Newark, Ohio and moved to Portland Or. in 1978.

I work in a glass factory and make stained glass windows from the scraps I bring home. Right now I'm working on a 23"by 60" sun. From what I was told as a kid my branch of Lofti got off the train from Ellis Island in Lebanon, Pa.

From the library research I've done the Loftus coat-of arms was three boar's heads, later split with an archer on the right side.

There is a Loftus cup for oration in the Irish Parliament

I'll write again later.Bye!
Daniel Loftus

Michael S. Loftus
My g-grandfather was Michael S. Loftus who immigrated in 1860 at the age of thirteen to Ohio or Indiana. His parents were Stephen Loftus and Marguerette Madden Loftus. I am not sure if Michael's parents came with him. He married Mary Lavin in 1878 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richmond, Indiana. Mary Lavin immigrated in 1877. Their children were: Michael (my grandfather), Thomas, John, Gertrude(Cecelia), Charles and Edward. Any of Mike's ancestors out there?

Thanks:

Jim Mahony
Hi Duane,

My name is Jim Mahony. I was surfing for info on my family history when I came upon your pages. I just thought I'd let you know that way back in my family there was an Ellen Loftus who married Thomas Crafton, and had a daughter named Catherine (born 1820). If anyone in your family is connected to Ellen, I can provide a truckload of descendants. Ellen is my Great-Great-Great Grandmother.

Hope I can help,
Jim
jim@howling.com

p.s. - You might also want to know that my Great-Aunt Ellen (Mahony-Shooltz-Eickholdt not Ellen Loftus) who wrote a detailed history some 28 years ago, states that "Both the Crafton and Loftus families were of the First Families of Ireland".

p.p.s. - I don't know if this will help you search your line in Ireland or not, but Aunt Ellen's History says that Catherine Crafton, daughter of Thomas and Ellen (Loftus) Crafton was born in County Mayo, Province of Cannaught.

Linda Loftus
Hey Duane:

My name is Linda Loftus (nee: Ayotte) of Phelpston, Ontario. Loftus is my married name. Stephen Michael Loftus born Mary 14, 1958 in the City of Barrie, Ontario was my husband. We have been divorced many years. We did produce a son Shane Michael Loftus, now 20, born February 19, 1977.

Shane's grandfather was Clair Bernard Loftus of R.R> #2 Elmvale, Ontario. Bernard unfortunately has passed away but has a surviving brother Terry (Terrance) Loftus of Elmvale and a sister (name forgotten).

I believe the ancestors hailed from County Cork, Ireland. I will bookmark this site for Shane and he can continue the dialogue.

Virginia (Jenny) Lofftus

I have a Loftus fragment for you.

I've been compiling the family history of the Allamans and we have a Jacob Horace Allaman, b. 21-Feb-1849 in Oquaka, IL; d. 23-Oct-1922 in Henderson Co., IL married to a Virginia (Jenny) Lofftus on 6-Jun-1857. Obviously, there is a problem with dates of either Jacob's birth or marriage. The double-f in "Lofftus" could also be an error.

If you can use the info, you can get more on the Allamans at http://az.fh.org/rjh/allaman/allaman.htm

Rich Henry
