Amsterdam, 7 March 1996 Greetings to all Loftus's everywhere. My name is Barbara M. Loftus, and I was born in Galway, Ireland. My father, Kevin P. Loftus, comes form Bonniconlon in Co Mayo. I am a pathologist, and live and work in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. As far as I am aware, there are three different origins of the name Loftus. It is known in Norway, and also in England but I don't know if there is a relationship between these two branches. In England, the name is uncommon, and is also spelled as Lofthouse, which is sometimes pronounced as Loftus. In Ireland the name originates in Co. Mayo, and I remember reading that an Archbisop of Tuam anglicised the Irish name O'Lochnain to Loftus in the 14th century. Many Irish names were anglised to make them easier for the English to pronounce. O'Lochnain was also anglised to Loughnane, which is a fairly common name in Co. Clare, and is thought by some people to be the same family as Loftus. #FEF3DA When I was at school we had to use the Irish form of our name, and the nuns who taught me used the form O'Lachtnain. The "English" Loftus is also known in Ireland and a rather famous Loftus was Adam Loftus, who was the architect who designed Trinity College in Ireland. The is also a "big house" in Co. Wexford called "Loftus Hall". I think therefore that the Norwegian, English and Irish Loftus's are probably not related. I do think that it is a great name, and I am interested in trying to trace any possible relatives of my father who emigrated from Co. Our father is Edward and his father was Patrick. Patrick was born around 1880, Edward was born in 1918 in Raton NM. Our family tree was traced by a family member back to Ireland. 10, 1996 Hello my name is Edward G Loftus. (better known as Eddie) I am the father of Duane and Charles. My father's name was Patrick and his father's name was William Thomas Loftus. My father was born in 1865 in Charleston Mass. William entered the U.S. at Boston during the Irish Potato famine. Patrick was one of four children, two boys and two girls. His siblings were Thomas, Clara, and Mary. Mary married and went by the name of McGuire in Silverton Colo. Clara married and went by the name of Hastings and lived in Durango Colo. My family consisted of nine children, seven boys and two girls. The first was Mary Loftus Harris born in 1900 in ElPaso TX. William Jerome Loftus was born in 1903 somewhere in TX. The next child was Thomas L. Loftus who was born in TX 1906. The fourth child was Lucy Loftus Nelson was born in TX in 1908. The fifth child Samuel was born in 1911 and died in 1922 in Dillon NM of Diptheria. The next child was Charles Patrick Loftus born in Raton NM in 1914. Number seven was James Allen Loftus was born Raton NM in 1916. I was number eight, born in 1918 in Raton NM. The last was Joseph Fredrick Loftus who was born in 1920 in Cimmiron NM. To the best of my knowledge my aunts and uncles lived and died in Colorado. I have a nephew, James Loftus who compiled a family tree that will be given to Duane for publishing on the net. PHOTO: |

25, 1996 Hello, I'm Joseph M. Loftus, married to Luci and have one child named Joseph C. Loftus. We live in Princeton IL. My father is James T. Loftus and he is originally from Decatur IL. His dad was Michael M. Loftus. I was born September 1965 and have 11 brothers & sisters (counting myself) all produced by Mom & Dad. Their names in order from oldest to youngest: Jimmy, Julie, Jill, Joe, John, Jeff, Jay, Jeremy, Judd, Jessica, Justin. They all reside within this area. My grandfather, Michael Milton Loftus, retired from Wabash Rail Road. His brother was a well known priest named father John from Decatur, IL. He also had a sister who was a nun, I believe her name was sister Celene, she too was from Decatur, IL. I need to get my father to log on, he knows more about the Loftus name than I do. Speaking of my father, he was a border student from Decatur, IL who graduated from St. Bede high school/Peru, IL. He graduated fom IL State University with a Bachelor of Science/ Physical Education. He served 14 years in the military, went to the Vietnam war twice and was a Captain in the Marine Corps. His favorite football team is Notre Dame. He believes we are Irish. I graduated from Lewis University as an aircraft (Airframe & Powerplant) mechanic. Immediately after graduating, I was hired on with the City of Princeton and I'm currently a class "C" water supply operator. 11, 1996 hey duane... very interesting page. i am kevin loftus. as you can see from my email address, people have quite a tough time spelling the ol' last name. seems that nobody can get it quite rite the first time around and seldom correct the second time. anyhow, i am currently living in raleigh north carolina doing the software development thing. my dad is lloyd(a production supervisor at Volvo) and i have a younger brother craig, a network guru back in radford virginia where i was raised. mom is named glenna, originally a graley, and makes a mean pot of chili. dad and mom are both from the mountains of wild, wonderful, wooly, west virginia. my grandfather was named earl and lived his whole life in west virginia. i am 28, my brother is 24, dad is 59, and mom is...umm...uh...29, rite mom? i had toyed with the idea of doing some sort of family history but never really knew where to start. i had been told by someone that the name loftus was norwegian. i dont really know what part of norway, or anything other than what this person told me. maybe you could dispense some knowledge my way... kevin |
