Dear Duane,
My name is James (Jim) Francis Loftus. I currently live in Texas,
although I am originally from Rhinecliff, NY. The first immigrant
in my line, my grandfather, Patrick J. Loftus, came to the US from
Ennis, Co. Clare around the turn of the century. He married Mary Cecilia
Ferguson and had several children.
My father, James (Jim) F. Loftus, (b. June 24, 1909 d. December 6,
1976) was born in New York City and lived most of his early life there.
He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was stationed
in England. He spent most of his life as a plumber and ended up as
a zoning enforcement officer in Rhinebeck, NY. He was also active
in town-level politics, having been an unsuccessful Democratic candidate
for office on several occasions.
He had several siblings:
Sisters: Mary Rita (Rita); Ellen (Hellen) Loftus (O'Leary) - deceased;
Johanna Theresa (Tess); Margaret (Peggy)
Brothers: Michael Robert (Mike) - deceased; Patrick J. (Pat) - deceased.
All three Loftus brothers, their parents and my mother are buried
in St. Joseph's cemetery in Rhinecliff.
While the women had children, they are not named Loftus and now have
children and grandchildren of their own (some by different husbands)
so it gets difficult to keep track without a score card!
James F. Loftus had two children, my sister Grace and myself. I have
one son, Seamus Eugene Loftus who lives in Vermont.
Michael R. Loftus had two children, Michael and Patrick, both of whom
have children. I can only remember a couple of the names, so I won't
list any here. Both sons live in Florida near their mother.
Patrick J. Loftus has two surviving sons, Christopher, and Patrick
(Jamie). Last I heard, they still live in the Rhinebeck, NY area.
Rhinecliff, NY
Rhinecliff,
NY is where most of my branch of the Loftus family lived at one time
or another. This hamlet situated on the east bank of the Hudson River
about 90 miles north of New York City is included in the Town of Rhinebeck.
My paternal grandparents owned several acres of land on a hill overlooking
the hamlet and the river with an excellent view of the river and the
Catskills in the distance. They lived in what we now refer to as "The
Big House". The building dates from the 1860's and seems to have
been used as a convent. When I lived in Rhinecliff, this house still
had a coal furnace for heat and coal-burning, cast-iron stoves for
cooking. My Uncle Mike modernized it when he moved in and the house
has been modernized even more by later owners. The property abuts
the St. Joseph's church property and the cemetery where many of the
family are buried. I grew up in a house across the street from The
Big House. My Aunt Tess lived in a house called "The Cottage"
situated at the bottom of the hill where Loftus Rd. intersects Orchard
St. During my time there, my aunt expanded the cottage so the name
no longer applies.
My cousin Mike recently went over to Ireland and met a lot of relatives
there who seem to know more what's going on with the US family than
we do here in the states! I think I'll take this opportunity to relate
a funny story that happened to him in Texas. One day he was in San
Antonio and went to rent a car. The desk clerk was surprised because
he had just rented a car to another Michael Loftus, this one from
Chicago. The clerk asked if they were related. My cousin replied that
he did not think so. Found out when he went to Ireland that they were,
through our grandfather. (This story is from memory as told to me
by Mike's mother so I make no claim to the accuracy of detail.)
I put a lot of detail in this response because I would be interested
in anyone who might be related through my grandfather, Patrick J.
Loftus, from Ennis, Co. Clare either in Ireland or elsewhere. I think
I remember seeing that he was born in 1888, but I might be wrong.
Yours truly,
Jim Loftus |

I
am interested in finding additional information about the Loftus family
of Youngstown, Ohio. My great grandfather, Patrick H. Loftus was a
puddler in the steel mills. He was born in Mayo, September 15, 1878
and died in Youngstown, Ohio, November 5, 1936. His wife was the former
Mary Ellen Berry, born in Mayo, December 23, 1874 and died in Youngstown,
October 11, 1928. Patrick and Mary had the following children:
Helen b. January 18, 1905. ( my grandmother) Later married Ray Crawford.
John b. July 12, 1906.
Maria b. May 16, 1909.
Thomas Patrick b. January 15,1911.
Catherine b. December 26, 1911.
I am a new computer user but have been working on genealogy for several
years. Here's hoping I have a Loftus link out there somewhere!

You
have probably already come across this; however, my dad (Donald James
Loftus) told me that when his great grandfather (who came over to
the U.S. from Ireland) claimed that the name Loftus used to be O'Lochnin
(may be that is not the exact spelling) and that the name was eventually
changed to its present form because of some sort of bad situation
between the Irish and English (persecution, etc.). Anyway, my dad
was born outside of Fort Dodge, IA. That was where my grandfather
and my great grandfather was born. I was born in Omaha, NE. and I'm
too young to get married right now (and my sister is younger than
I am) so that is as far as our branch has gone as of now. I was surprised
to see this page and I'll tell my dad about it and may be he can give
you more information.
Sincerely,
Matt |

Duane,
my mother was Katherine Loftus O'Malley (b.1903), the youngest child
of Thomas and Brigid (Quinn) Loftus, was from Cloughbrack, Boffeenaun,
County Mayo.
My grandparents and many other Loftus family members are buried in
the churchyard of St. Therese Church, Boffeenaun, which is on the
west side of Lough Conn, between Crossmolina and Castlebar.
My mother could trace, in her oral history, the ownership of the family
farm by a Thomas Loftus back to the 1800's. She said that the Loftus"people"
were always known as scholars.
My mother, 1 sister (Ellen) and 1 brother (Thomas) emigrated to Chicago
in the 1920's. They were all great Irish patriots and would be amused,
to say the least, to think that they might be of English descent!
My mother had Loftus cousins who emigrated to Brooklyn and other cousins
in Chicago.
I wish now that I had written it down when she was alive and able
to tell me the relationships. My mother's sister lived on the farm
until she died and the Loftus farm is now owned by another family.
Let me know if I can answer any questions.
I also have a copy of the Loftus family name history that I bought
in Dublin in 1993 from the Historical Research Center. It is interesting.
It says that for further research see the 'Loftus Papers" in
Analecta Hibernica Vol. XXV and the Loftus Family Record by Robert
Day in the Cork Historical and Archaelogical Society Journal (1896).

My
name is Susan (Loftus) Ramsdell, I really enjoyed finding your registry
in the internet. I have one brother Richard Loftus age 50 and one
sister Nancy Loftus age 37. My fathers name was Lowell, he was one
of five children Frank, Thomas, Richard, and Helen. My fathers' father
was Frank and he had 3 siblings Laura, Thomas, and Marion. All were,
including myself, and my brother and sister were all born in Fall
River Massachusetts. We always thought we were of English descent,
but maybe we are more Irish. Is anyone familiar with the Fall River
Loftus Clan!! |

Hello
Fellow Loftus!!!!
I was just minding my own business and cruisin' the ol' Info Highway
and decided to do a search on my name to see if my Links got set up,
and what do I find???? Well, The Loftus Family Registry, Of course!
So, here I am, but I should warn you I'm not a "Real" Loftus,
I married one! ...but I do have kids so I guess that gives me some
kinda in, doesn't it??
Anyway, The wonderful man I'm married to is named: Paul Loftus He
is born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He is the son of
Thomas Loftus Sr. and Louise Pechal Loftus. Thomas Loftus Sr. is the
son of James Loftus and Mary Kearns Loftus and that's as far I have
gone with his family tree.
It might also interest you to know that Paul has 7 sisters and 4 living
brothers, 1 brother has passed away.
We tried to do some detective work a few years back and managed to
find out that his family did originate in Ireland. (They owned some
type of shop, although neither of us can recall what it was) - and
we know his name is a derivitive of the original - the original was
lengthy and much different from the current spelling.
Anyway, you've stirred my interest again, so I think I'll take a walk
to the local library and check some old newspapers for obituaries.
(I have the dates of death on his grandparents). Maybe I will dig
up something interesting. (No pun intended!) I'm also going to check
on the names of his father's siblings.
Oh yeah, We are planning a Loftus Family reunion for next year. It
was intended for immediate family, (we hardly see each other anymore!),
but maybe we'll be able to introduce some new cousins!
Good Luck in your Search, I'll keep you posted if I find anything!
Sincerely, Kandis
Loftus
Wilkes-Barre, PA Hi,
It's me, Kandi, again! I noticed that you said there are not many
Loftuses to be found in your area. Not so here! Loftus is a very
popular name in the Wyoming Valley section of PA, not as big as
"Smith" but we hold our own. Just thought you'd like to
know! |
