Paul M. Loftus
August 30, 1996

Duane - My posting to Loftus Home page: Our branch of the Loftus family tree goes back to Swinford, in County Mayo. My great grandfather was Martin Loftus who was married to Mary Muldowney Loftus. Martin and Mary had eight children: John, the eldest and father of Matty of Boston's Horseshoe Tavern fame. (Albert Wardwell - that makes us 3rd cousins I think.) 2nd of the eight was Michael, 3rd - Mary who married William Scarf. William died and she later remarried James Kennedy. 4th was Martin, and 5th was Patrick who married Theresa Thayne. 6th of the 8 children was Catherine who married Albert Newing, 7th was Bridget who married Thomas Byrne and youngest of the 8 children of Martin and Mary was William, my grandfather. William married Bridget Casey and they lived in Larksville, Pa, near Wilkes Barre. William and Bridget had 7 children; Vincent, my father was the youngest. I have 1 brother who lives in NJ and 2 sisters who live in PA. My name is Paul Michael Loftus, and I was born in Berwick, Pa. I am married to Barbara and we have 4 children. We have lived in CT for 4 years, having lived in NY, MD, and NC, before that.

John Griffin

August 30, 1996

My name is John Griffin, and I live near Sydney in the State of New South Wales, Australia. My Great, Great, Grandmother was Catherine Mary LOFTUS. Catherine was born in Sligo, Ireland c1821, her father being Anthony LOFTUS , a tailor by trade and her mother was Mary Catherine MAY. Catherine (Loftus) migrated to Australia about 1840 and married Henry Blackler in Sydney on the 30th June 1842. She died in Dubbo (a town in western NSW about 450Km west of Sydney) on the 24th October 1897 and was buried in the Dubbo Cemetery the next day. Catherine and Henry had 9 children. I have, at this stage in my research, been unable to ascertain if Catherine's parents or any of her brothers and sisters migrated to Australia. I really do not know if she indeed had any brothers or sisters. The Irish connection for this LOFTUS is; Sligo, county Sligo, Irish Republic. According to Bourks Peerage, Edward LOFTUS of Swinehead, County York, England had two sons one of whom moved to Ireland, along with his nephew c1516. Through a complicated hereditary process, a descendant LOFTUS progressed through the ranks of Viscount and earl to become the Marquis of ELY. The entry in the book is under ELY and is worth reading, it may throw some light on your Irish LOFTUS connection. Lord Augustus William Frederick Spencer LOFTUS, was the 4th son of the second Marquis of Ely, born on the 4th October 1817 at Clifford near Bristol, England. He entered the diplimatic service and after appointments to Berlin and St Petersburg he was appointed the Governor of the Colony of New South Wales (Australia) on the 4th August 1879, holding that office until 9th November 1885. Lord A.W.F.S. Loftus then returned to England where he was declared bankrupt in 1888, he died in Surry England on the 4th March 1909. According to family folklore my Great, Great, Grandmother, Catherine Mary Loftus, was related to Lord Loftus the Governor of NSW. So far I have not been able to establish this connection.

Here are some interesting facts and statistics surrounding the name Loftus in Australia:
1 There are 234 listed entries in the Australia Telephone Books. *

2 In the state of NSW between 1788 and 1945 the following births, deaths and marriages have been recorded. *

Births 64 81 N/A

3. A street in the CBD of Sydney is named after Lord Loftus.vis. LOFTUS STREET.

4. A town, which is now a southern suburb of Sydney, is called LOFTUS.

* These lists can be obtained, and mailed to you, if required.

John had 3 other sons - Julius, Arthur, & Theodore. Grandpa was the oldest - he got the farm - the other three went to Alaska in the 20's. They did all right and retired in Coos Bay, Oregon. Other relatives hail from Sand Creek, Wisconsin. Hope to hear from you.

Sincerely, Howard Koth

William Logan Loftis
Hi

I'm William Logan Loftis. (Are spelling variants allowed?) I live now in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA), but I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina - a town called Brevard. My father was John Edgar Loftis, Jr, his father was Sr.(of course), his was Andrew Jackson Loftis, and finally Vaden Loftis. Vaden moved to Transylvania County (county seat Brevard) from Iredell County in North Carolina on the Virginia border. Vaden (by family tradition) always claimed to be 'a good Irishman'. The 1790 US census lists a William Loftis, wife and son in Iredell County. Likely this was Vaden. Family tradition has it that three brothers came from Ireland (date unknown) - one went to Virginia, one to South Carolina and one to Philadelphia.

This is all I know and I'd like to know more.

Email me at wloftis@nw3arch.com.

Thanks, and good luck to all.

Edward V. Loftus
It's amazing how many of us Loftuses come from County Mayo! My name is Ed Loftus. I'm originally from the Philadelphia, PA area. All four of my grandparents emigrated from Ireland, including Peter Loftus from County Mayo. He immigrated to USA (Philadelphia) in the 1910s I believe. He met Josephine Carrabine, also from County Mayo, in Philadelphia, and they had seven children, including my father, Edward V. Loftus, Sr. I currently reside in Rochester, Minnesota. I am a physician specializing in gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic.

I don't know very much about our history yet, although the discovery of this page is good incentive to start searching. Hopefully I can provide you with further information about Australian Loftuses in the future.

All the best.
