Hi, my name is Virginia Loftus. I was born and raised in Vermont.
I am 19 years old and I am attending the University of Vermont.
I am extremely interested in tracing my family roots.
My
parents' names are Brian and Barbara (Roach). My father was born
in New Jersey. His father, Howard J. Loftus Jr. was born in Scranton,
PA. His father was also Howard J. Loftus, and his father was William
F. Loftus.
I
don't know when or who the first Loftus in my family was to come
to this country. My dad also has a brother, Howard J. Loftus III,
and a half sister who is also a Loftus but I am not sure of her
name.
I
will try to find out more history the next time I speak with my
grandfather, but for now I thought you might like this information
for something.
If
you have any information for me about how I might go about finding
out more please e-mail me at VLOFTUS@bsadpo.emba.uvm.edu
Thank
you,

HI!
My husband is Andrew John Loftus and was born in Buffalo, NY in
1965. His parents are Edward Loftus, currently residing in Tucson,
AZ and Lesley Bibbey-Trevor, currently residing in Dennison, OH.
They were both from Liverpool, UK and emigrated to the US in 1964.
Andrew
was the first in his family to be born in the US. We don't know
anymore about his family because Ed (or Ted as he is called in England)
was adopted. We don't know if Loftus was his adopted name or birth
name.
It is our understanding that the Loftus name originated from "Lofthouse"
and is English.
I
am looking forward to seeing others on this location.

Hi,
there cousin, this is your cousin, James Eldon Loftus, Sr, son of
Thomas E. Loftus and Anna Mae Alderson, remember me? Pat (my brother)
and his wife Mitzi just happen to stumble onto your web site and
boy are we excited about it. We have been wanting to set up our
own home page, but we just haven't had the chance or software. You
have some great information, I have information that can be added
to it.
Did
your dad give you any of the information I gave to him about your
great-grandfather and grandmother: Thomas Loftus, b. 6/7/1832, Co.
Mayo, Ireland; m. 1863 in Moorsidefold Eng; d. 8/4/1911, Durango,
CO (NOTE: the picture you have on the Web of the great uncle's headstone,
is the Woodsmen of America headstone, your great-grandparents are
buried on either side of this stone); Brigete Mulderick, b. about
1834 in Co. Mayo, Ireland; d. 2/3/1896 in Durango, CO?
If
you would like more information regarding the Loftus family from
Thomas Loftus down to Patrick Loftus (your grandfather) and the
other children of Thomas Loftus, we have all kinds of information.
One
problem we have been researching and would like to put out there
on the web is: we are searching for Patrick Loftus' first child
by his first wife Azzie O'Neal. Patrick Loftus and Azzie O'Neal
were married in Pine River, CO (now Bayfield, CO.) March 10, 1895,
then they were married in the St, Columbo Catholic church in January
of 1896, in Durango. We speculate that Brigete (Patrick's mother)
insisted upon this ceremony for she died two months later.
We
speculate that a child, most likely a son, was born before the second
marriage in January 1896. Azzie O'Neal's father was Lunnie O'Neal
and mother was Sarah McClellan, we believe they came from Indiana
or Illinois. Sarah died Sept. 12, 1931 in Durango, but was buried
in Danville, IL. The name was incorrectly spelled as ONIEL.
My
dad, Thomas Loftus, remembered a man coming to the train station
there in Raton, (sometime around 1936 or 1937, after he and mom
were married) telling him he was his half-brother. Dad knew nothing
about his dad's first marriage at that time and sent the man on
his way for he thought he was someone just begging for money. When
he found out about it a few years before his death, he always wondered
if that man WAS his half-brother.
We
have not been able to find any record of a birth occuring in the
Pine River/Bayfield area. We can not find a death certificate on
Azzie O'Neal Loftus in Colorado either. We have not tried IL as
yet. We also could not find any divorce records in Durango for Patrick
and Azzie.

My
name is Margaret Jones/McKenzie. I was born in London both my parents
were born in Edinburgh. My grandfather was born in Breaffy - Ballina
-John Mckenzie. I've been researching my family since 1989 have
had very little luck on the Loftus side so far.
I hope that someone out there can help.
My
grandmother was Margaret Loftus her parents were
- Thomas Loftus / Bridget Newcombe - from the townland
of Prebbane in the parish of Kilgarvin-Bonniconlon.
I
know of 2 other children born to them -Thomas bap. 29-6-1873 and
Catherine bap. 25-2-1872 grandmother was born approx. 1880. There
was also a brother Mark and another sister Bridget. No reference
could be found to the family in the 1901census for the area.
My
grandmother married in Edinburgh in 1901 - her sister Bridget married
an American and lived there. My grandparents lived in the Grassmarket
Edinburgh, also in the Grassmarket was a Patrick Loftus who ran
a lodging house for single men. He was married to an Agnes Finlay.
Other
members of the family were Michael Loftus m to Mary Clarke. also
a Martin and Bridget dau. Annie son Peter. Agnes Loftus. Catherine
gt. aunt known as Kate married a Clarke.
In
the 1851 census for the old town of Edinburgh there are other Loftus
names -- Patrick age 60 yrs m to Helen 50 yrs. Children Michael
12 yrs, Helen 10 yrs, Thomas 8 yrs and Catherine 6 yrs, all born
in Ireland. There is mention of a Bridget Loftus 30 yrs, William
43 yrs not related ? and another Bridget also 30yrs.
Later
in the 1881 census there is a John Loftus 30 yrs m to Ann 29 yrs.
Children are Michael 9 yrs, Mary 7 yrs and Maggie 1 yr. all stated
to have been born in Ireland. I know of a Celia (Selina) Loftus
who ran a lodging house in Wigan and lastly there are also mention
of the family in the 1881 census for Warrington all of whom were
born in Ireland, Mayo is mentioned.
I
hope that my contribution to the name will help some of you out
there. I visited Mayo last year and went to Kilgarvin cemetery.
There were many of the Loftus family buried there. No mowers for
the grass - only the sheep to keep it down.
Please
let me know if anyone has links with Edinburgh Scotland.

Greetings.
My
name is James Loftus (I go by Jim), and I live in Clinton, Wash.
(about 35 mi from Seattle). I'm an associate editor at ESPNET SportsZone,
perhaps you've heard of us? My wife is Lisa, and our kids ae Meghan
(8), Brennan (5) and Kellen (nearly 2).
I can
really only trace my branch of the Loftus tree back three generations:
* My father was John Joseph Loftus, born in Washington, D.C.;
* My grandfather was John Alphonse (sp?) Loftus, who worked for the
U.S. state department in the 40s and 50s, living in Paris, Rome and
Bangkok, among others; his sister, Katherine P. Loftus, was a teacher
in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she still lives.
* My great-grandfather was John Joseph Loftus, who (I believe) was
superintendent of public schools in New York City waaayyy back.
I was raised in California (in fact, you have my uncle Peter Loftus,
artist, of Santa Cruz, CA, listed on your links page). Peter is my
father's brother; the third brother in that family is Ronald Loftus,
professor of Japanese language at Wilamette University in Salem, OR.
At
one point, my great aunt (Katherine P. Loftus) tried to trace our
tree, and I believe she came up with County Tyrone, although I might
be mistaken. An Irish priest I met once said he thought it would be
a bit north of there. Hmmm.
Thanks,
and feel free to include my email address: loftus@whidbey.com

Duane,
Great
Loftus page. I'm an O'Neill (my father, Michael is from Caherea,
Lissycasey, Co. Clare), but my mother is a Loftus. I work in Stamford,
CT and live in Westchester, NY.
My
mother, Nellie Loftus (O'Neill), was born in 1940 in Oulouge, Callow
(between Foxford and Swinford) Co. Mayo to Patrick and Kate Loftus.
Her
father, Patrick, was born there in 1904 (he died in 1992). Her mother,
Kate O'Neill, was born in Rooskey nearby, in 1899 (she died in 1987).
My
mother has four sisters: Sally Healy (Highgate, London, England),
Bridie Loughlin (East Brunswick, NJ), Mary (Kings Park, NY), and
Kathleen Durkan (Castlebar, Co. Mayo). My mother and father live
in Commack, NY.
My
grandfather was born to Patrick and Sarah Loftus. He was one of
eight children. The others were: Martin, Henry, Thaddy, Eddie, Mary,
Sally, and John. The last two were twins. My mother and her sisters
lived with Sally when they first came to America in the late 1950s.
She had emigrated years before.
My
Grandmother was born to Hugh O'Neill and the former Bridgit Battle.
Incidentally,
another set of Loftuses lived next store to my mother's family.
Jack and Mary Loftus (no relation) now live in Swinford, but their
son, Kevin, still lives in the house next to my mother's.
Just
wanted to check in and say thank you for your efforts.
Mike
